This hands-on workshop will explore the use of computational linguistics for historical analysis.  McEnery and Hardie (2012:1–2) define corpus linguistics as  ‘a group of methods for studying language… dealing with some set of machine-readable  texts…or corpus which is usually of a size which defies analysis by hand and  eye alone within any reasonable timeframe…corpora are invariably exploited  using tools which allow users to search through them rapidly and reliably.’

An overview of how computational linguistics may be used to answer historical question will precede a hands-on demonstration of the rudiments of corpus linguistic analysis. This workshop will use AntConc, a free, open source program that works on all operating systems.    Attendees are encouraged to download Antconc on their own laptop to bring to the workshop.  They may also bring their own corpora in order to maximize benefits of participation.

Attendees may also wish to look at the following projects:
A Digital History of Gender in the History of Woman Suffrage, Michelle Moravec
Quantifying Kissinger, Micki Kaufman

Or how-tos the companion site for Exploring Big Historical Data: The Historian’s Macroscope by Shawn Graham, Ian Milligan and Scott Weingart
Corpus Analysis with Antconc By Heather Froehlich
